Before painting, I collage fabrics on to the canvas – often old shirts, sometimes scraps from my tailors: Japanese and Italian cottons, Libertys. They add texture and patterns, though usually completely covered in paint, as well as riff off the addage “take the shirt off my back”. This painting is the only work that includes my partner’s clothing – a beautiful silk ruined in the wash, now a moody sepia shape. Private Collection.
