Largest work to date 28th April 2023
My exhibition No Straight Lines at Te Where Toi o Heretaunga Hastings City Art Gallery provided the opportunity to negotiate with its Main Gallery, the largest un-poled space in the Southern Hemisphere. Visitor emerged from between giant floating panels to stand in front of a 17 metre long wall, on which I’d placed 28th April 2023 to fill their entire field of vision.
This work comprised on six canvases, each 2.8m high and 1.8m wide, to create a series of chapters or verses that ran along 10.8m of the wall. While there is continuity from one to the other, I’ve played with the slippage between each, like between episodes. The end (or beginning) panel is without the strong illusionistic depth of the other panels, and with its deep blue colour-field, emphasises the materiality of paint.
