Summer 2021

Summer 2021

200cm x 50cm x 40cm

I started work on this project just as borders began closing, and finished it in late summer as the vaccinations began. The headpiece is a mask of sorts – partly ceremonial, partly protective. The suit is shiny, made from a new natural textile, but it’s also the sheen of PPE. The figure is hung with amulets to ward off evil. Summer 2021 faces the pandemic with a brilliant resolve – to continue. Made in collaboration with Strangely Normal. Kindly funded by Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.

This painting was the centrepiece of Trip Hazard (2021), and marked a fresh approach for me. I sought to put more space into the paintings, to empty out the detail yet retain the surface complexity.

Small paintings are often more powerful than their size. This painting is a rough and ready combination of scratchy lines and scumbled colours, yet manages a sweetness with its marshmallow pink centre – oh so yummy!

I don’t usually describe my work as muscular, but the bold, red, calligraphic gesture at the centre of this painting asserts itself unashamedly.

It is an honour and a pleasure to be the first “proper” artwork bought by first-time collectors.
